BALACHNA, a circle of the Russian government of
Nishegorod, containing about 90,000 inhabitants. The
chief place is a city of the same name, at the junction of
the river Usola with the Wolga. It contains about 4500
inhabitants, who carry on a trade in linen, and in salt pro-
