MAIXENT, St, a city of France, of the department of the Deux Sèvres and arrondissement of Niort, situated on the navigable river Sèvre-Niortaise. Though it suffered much in the Vendéan war, it has been re-established, and contains 610 houses, with 4200 inhabitants, who are occupied in making serges, hats, and hosiery.
