MAKARIEW, a circle of the Russian province Kostroma. It extends from 58.7. to 59. north latitude, and from 43.10. to 44.4. east longitude. It is a poor district, and affords very little corn, but some flax and hemp. The capital, of the same name, is situated on the river Unsha, which is navigable but a few months in the year. It is 633 miles from St Petersburg, and contains three churches, a monastery, 520 houses, and 2940 inhabitants. Long. 45. 15. E. Lat. 57. 40. N.
