CHALONS, an arrondissement in the department of the Marne, in France, extending to 510 square miles, divided into four cantons, and subdivided into eighty communes, containing 36,824 inhabitants. The capital is the city of Chalons-Sur-Marne, an irregular and ill-built town, containing 2800 houses, and a population of 11,000 souls. It has some mills for spinning cotton and flax, and a few woollen goods are made. It is situated in longitude 4. 16. 24. E., and latitude 48. 57. 28. N.
