Sisters of CHARITY (Sœurs de la Charité), an order of female hospitalers, instituted, or rather revived, in France since the commencement of the present century, and consisting chiefly, if not wholly, of professed nuns, who devote themselves to the duties of attending the female poor and sick in the hospitals, ministering to their wants, dressing their sores, and affording them religious consolation in the midst of their sufferings. This order includes females belonging to some of the first families in France.
