CHARLES MARTEL, a renowned conqueror in the early annals of France. He deposed and restored Chiléric, king of France; and had the entire government of the kingdom, first with the title of Mayor of the Palace, and afterwards as Duke of France; but he would not accept the crown. He died regretted in 741.
