CHEMNITZ, a city in the circle of Erzgebirge, of the kingdom of Saxony, the chief place of a bailiwick of the same name. It is situated on a plain elevated about nine hundred and forty feet above the level of the sea, on the rivers Chemnitz and Gabelnitz. It contains 12,000 inhabitants, who are industriously employed in various branches of the cotton, linen, and woollen manufacture; and in the trades of brewers, distillers, hatters, and hosiers. About a mile from the city is the ancient electoral palace of the reigning family.
