CHOUL, LOWER, is a sea-port town and fort, formerly belonging to the Portuguese, at the mouth of a river in Aurungabad. It was besieged by Sambagee, but without success; and it does not appear when the Mahrattas got possession of it. In the year 1777 it was ceded to the French, who found it too defenceless for their acceptance. Long. 72. 46. E. Lat. 18. 36. N.
