CHRISM (from χρισμός, I anoint), oil consecrated by the bishop, and used in the Roman Catholic and Greek churches, in the administration of baptism, confirmation, ordination, and extreme unction. It is prepared on Holy Thursday with much ceremony.
The chrism in baptism is performed by the priest, and in confirmation by the bishop. That used in ordination is more usually styled unction.
