CLASS, an appellation given to the most general subdivisions of any thing. Thus, animal is subdivided into the classes of quadrupeds, birds, fishes, and so forth, which are again subdivided into series or orders; and these last into genera. See ANIMAL KINGDOM and BOTANY.
