CATANZARO, a city of Italy, the capital of the Neapolitan province of Calabria Ulteriore. It is situated between the rivers Alti and Corace, on an elevation about five miles from the Gulf of Squillace. It is walled, and has a castle. It is the seat of a bishop, of the civil, criminal, and appeal courts, and of some institutions for education; and it contains 11,464 inhabitants, some of whom are employed in silk manufactures.
