GALL, St, the capital of the canton of that name in Switzerland. It stands between two hills, on the river Steinach. It is surrounded with walls and ditches, but is well built, with broad streets and good houses. It contains 960 houses, and about 9500 inhabitants, of whom 8000 are Protestants. It is a flourishing city, of great industry in manufactures of cotton, linen, and silk, and some in woollen goods. Long. 9. 21. 37. E. Lat. 47. 21. 50. N.
