GREGORY, Theodorus, surnamed Thaumaturgus or the Wonder-worker, on account of his alleged miracles, was the scholar of Origen, and was elected Bishop of Neocæsarea in Pontus, the place of his birth, about the year 240. He assisted at the council of Antioch, in 255, against Paul of Samosata; and died in 270. He had the satisfaction of leaving only seventeen idolaters in his diocese, where there were scarcely as many Christians when he was ordained. There are still extant of his, a congratulatory oration to Origen, a canonical epistle, a paraphrase on Ecclesiastes, and some other compositions, which have been published in the collection entitled SS. Patrum Gregorii Thaumaturgi, Macarii Egyptii, et Basiliæ Seleuciensis Opera Graeco-Latina, Paris, 1622, in folio.
