PERONNE, an arrondissement of the department of the Somme, in France. It is 465 square miles in extent, and is divided into eight cantons, which are subdivided into 184 communes, containing 98,500 inhabitants. The capital is the city of the same name, situated on the river Somme, in a position marshy and almost inaccessible to an attacking force.
