PONTARLIER, an arrondissement of the department of the Doubs, in France, extending over 531 square miles. It is divided into five cantons, and these into ninety communes, containing 43,100 inhabitants. The capital is the city of the same name, situated in a mountainous district on the banks of the river Doubs. It contains 640 houses, and 4100 inhabitants.
