HALL, or Swabian Hall, a city of the kingdom of Württemberg, in the circle of the Jaxt, the capital of a bailiwick of the same name, which extends over 153 square miles, and contains a population of about 24,000 inhabitants. The city is built on both banks of the river Kocher, and, including its suburbs, is surrounded with strong walls, defended by lofty towers and ditches. It has a beautiful town-hall, a Gothic cathedral, and six other churches, and contains 740 houses and 6950 inhabitants. There is a gymnasium with nine professors and a good library. It is celebrated for its saline springs, from which, by thirty-two pans, nearly 100,000 quintals of culinary salt is annually made. Its chief trade consists in corn, wood, soap, starch, and cattle.
