HATHERLEIGH, a market-town of the county of Devon, in the hundred of Black Torington, 200 miles from London. It stands on the small river Towridge, at its junction with the Ock. It is an ancient borough, governed by a port-revee, and had till within a few years some manufactures of woollen goods, which have gradually decayed. It has a market, which is held on Friday. The population amounted in 1801 to 1218, in 1811 to 1380, in 1821 to 1499, and in 1831 to 1606.
