HERISSON, in Fortification, a beam armed with a great number of iron spikes with their points turned outwards, and supported by a pivot on which it turns. Herissons serve as barriers to block up passages, and are frequently placed before the gates, and more especially the wicket-doors, of a town or fortress, to secure those passages which must of necessity be frequently opened and shut.
