BUTTON, A cross button, in Heraldry, terminates at each end in three buds, knots, or buttons, resembling in some measure the three-leaved grass; on which account Segoin, in his Trésor Heraldique, terms it croix trefflée. It is the badge of the order of St. Maurice.
