EQUIVOCATION, the using a term or expression which has a double signification. Equivocations are expedients to avoid telling the truth, yet without telling a direct falsehood. Some of the fathers are great patrons of equivocations and mental reservations, and hold that the use of such shifts and ambiguities is in many cases allowable.
