FESCENNINE VERSES, Versus Fescennini, see the preceding article. The word, according to Macrobius, is formed from fascinum, a charm, because the people conceived such songs calculated to drive away witches, or prevent the effect of their witchcraft; but its more probable origin is from Fescenni, a city of Etruria, where these verses originated, as above explained.
