CROISES, or CROIZES, in English antiquity, pilgrims bound for the Holy Land, or such as had been there; so called from a badge they wore in imitation of a cross. The knights of St. John of Jerusalem, created for the defence and protection of pilgrims, were particularly called Croisés.
