DARIEN, a great gulf on the coast of Darien. It measures twenty-six leagues from north to south, and nine from east to west. Several rivers flow into it, the largest of which is the Atrato. The coast is full of sharp and inaccessible shoals, and only towards the west and south are there places fit for disembarking. The limits of the gulf are sometimes extended to the sea which washes the shores of the provinces of Panama and Darien.
