MITE, a small piece of money mentioned in St Luke's Gospel (xii. 59, and xxi. 2). In the Greek it is χιδανήν, quadrans, or a quarter of the Roman denarius; so that the mite was worth about seven farthings, or nearly two-pence of our money.
