MILTON, or Milton-Royal, a town of the county of Kent, in the hundred of Milton and lathe of Seray, forty miles from London. It stands at the head of a navigable creek, in a swampy situation between Seltingbourne and the river Thames. It has a corporation governed by a portreeve; has a market on Saturday, and is principally known for the excellence of the oysters bred there. The population amounted in 1801 to 1622, in 1811 to 1746, in 1821 to 2012, and in 1831 to 2223.
