WIGTON, a market-town of the county of Cumberland. It is in the ward of Cumberland, twelve miles from Carlisle, and 65 miles from London, in the vicinity of the ruins of an ancient Roman work called Caer Leol. The market is on Tuesday. The population amounted in 1821 to 4056, and in 1831 to 4885; but the parish comprehends three other townships, and in 1831 contained 6501 inhabitants.
