SOURGOUTE, a small town of Asiatic Russia, situated on the Obi, in a climate so severe that no grain can be raised in the neighbourhood. The town consists of 168 houses, and contains two churches. It is the residence of a commissary, who collects an annual tribute of furs from the Ostiaks, the inhabitants of the country.
