NICOLAS, St, a large market-town of the Netherlands, situated in the province of East Flanders, and arrondissement of the Dender. It is well built, has a fine market-place, and is in one of the richest agricultural districts of that rich country, where husbandry is better conducted than in almost any part of Europe. It has 11,500 inhabitants, many of whom are employed in making cloths and cotton goods, in distilleries, and in various other branches of manufacture.
