ORVIETO, a city of Italy, in the delegation Viterbo, in the papal dominions. It stands on a tuffstein rock, on the banks of the Paglia, and has a magnificent cathedral with some very fine paintings, a noble episcopal palace, with several other churches, and fourteen convents or monasteries for the professed of both sexes.
