entitled Geschichte der Neuern Poesie und Beredsamkeit, in 12 vols. 8vo, 1801-19. He was born at Ocken, near Goslar, in 1766, filled the chair of mental philosophy at Göttingen from 1797, and died at Göttingen in 1828. In philosophy he at first adopted the system of Kant, but afterwards forsook it for that of Jacobi. His great work has been translated into various languages. It bears the stamp of a refined taste, and an intimate acquaintance with the literature of Europe. The volume on the literature of Spain is the best on that subject.
