BRAIT, among jewellers, denotes a rough diamond. BRAKEL, JAN DE, a brave officer of the Dutch navy, born in 1618. He greatly distinguished himself on many occasions, but chiefly by his gallant struggle in 1672 against the combined fleets of Britain and France. He fell in an action against the French in 1690.
