BROTHER, GABRIEL, was born at Tannay in 1723, and was brought up a Jesuit. On the suppression of the order he devoted himself entirely to literature. He is best known by his edition of Tacitus, which appeared at Paris in 1771, 4 vols. 4to. He also edited Pliny, in 6 vols. 12mo, 1779; and Phædrus, in 1783. His revised edition of Amyot's translation of Plutarch appeared in 22 vols. 1783. This eminent scholar died at Paris, in February 1789.
