BROWN, John, D.D., author of the Self-interpreting Bible, was born at Kerpoo in Perthshire in 1722. He was, for a great part of his life, minister of the United Secession church in Haddington. Though he had not enjoyed the advantages of a regular education, he speedily made himself master of the classical tongues, and gained a great reputation for learning, piety, and eloquence. David Hume, hearing him preach on one occasion, exclaimed, "That man preaches as if his Master were at his elbow." He died in 1787. The best of his works, which are very numerous, is his Self-interpreting Bible, a work that is still very popular in Scotland.
