DOCIMENUM ΜΑΡΜΟΝ, a name given by the ancients to a bright and clear white marble obtained from the quarries near Docimenos, a town in Phrygia. It was much used in building temples and other sumptuous edifices at Rome, and was accounted little inferior to the Parian in colour, but inferior in the compactness of its grain; and hence it was seldom used by statuary.
