EKATERINOSLAY, the capital of the above government, is situated on the right bank of the Dnieper, immediately below the Cataracts, in N. Lat. 48.27.20., E. Long. 35.5.53. The first stone of the town was laid by the Empress Catherine II. in 1787. It is laid out on a regular plan with broad rectangular streets, but is still far from being completely filled up. Pop. (1851) 12,117. It is the seat of an archbishop, and has an ecclesiastical seminary, gymnasium, and manufactures of woollens and silks.
