ELEAZAR, the eldest son of Aaron. He succeeded his father in the high-priesthood, and held the pontificate during the military government of Joshua. This was also the name of one of the Maccabean brothers, who was crushed to death by the fall of an elephant which he had stabbed in the belief that it carried Antiochus Eupator.
