ENNISCORTHY, a market-town of Ireland, county of Wexford, and 13 miles N.N.W. of the town of that name. The town, which is situated on the declivities of steep hills, on both sides of the river Slaney, is well built and thriving. The chief public buildings are the parish church, Roman Catholic chapel, convent, Methodist and Quaker meeting-houses, court-house, market-house, hospital, bridewell, and an old castle. It is a place of considerable trade; and two extensive quays have been constructed along the river. There are tanneries, breweries, flour-mills, a distillery, rope-walk, and an earthenware manufactory. Market-days, Thursday and Saturday. Pop. (1851) 7735. In the vicinity of the town is Vinegar Hill.
