PRIEGO, a town of Spain, Andalusia, in the province of Cordova, partly on a fertile plain, and partly on the slopes of the Sierra di Algarrinejo, 34 miles S.E. of Cordova. It is well built, and has broad, straight, and well-paved streets, adorned with several fountains, some of which are very elegant structures. Here are the ruins of a castle built by the Romans, and afterwards repaired and enlarged by the Moors. The public buildings include various churches, hospitals, and schools; a town-hall, theatre, flesh-market, &c. Oil and flour mills, tanneries, and potteries are the chief manufactures of the place. Priego was formerly a very wealthy town, on account of its numerous silk factories; but this branch of industry is not now extensively pursued here. This town was the birthplace of the sculptor Don Jose Alvarez. Pop. 13,464.
