PURNEAH, the capital of the above district, on both sides of the Little Kosee, 283 miles N.W. of Calcutta. It covers a wide space of ground, but this is partly occupied by gardens and plantations. The principal street, which is on the left side of the river, is broad, straight, and lined with good tiled houses. The only public building of importance is that which accommodates the civil establishment for the district, and which stands in one of the suburbs. Pop. nearly 50,000.
