QUILON, a seaport-town of India, in the native state of Travancore, presidency of Madras, 385 miles S.W. of Madras, and 740 S.E. of Bombay. There is here a British cantonment, containing a barracks and an hospital. The town has also a jail under the native authorities; and an Episcopal church has been erected some years ago. Communication is carried on with Trivandrum, the capital of Travancore, by means of canals running parallel to the shore; and similar means of transit extend in the opposite direction northwards. The chief productions of Quilon are timber, cocoa-nuts, pepper, ginger, and coffee. There is good anchorage in a bight about 3 miles from the fort. Pop. estimated at 20,000.
