CEPHEALIS, a newly instituted genus of the natural order of Rubiaceae or cinchonaceous plants, containing many species; of which the most important is C. ippecacuanha, the root of which is employed in medicine as an emetic, expectorant, and diaphoretic. It is a native of the shady forests of Brazil.
