CHARITE, LA, a town of France, department of Nièvre, on the right bank of the Loire, here crossed by a handsome bridge. It is an ancient town, formerly of greater importance, and is still partly surrounded by ramparts flanked by towers of the fourteenth century. It has an active trade, and considerable manufactures of hardware, jewellery, glass, earthenware, &c. Pop. 4500.
