CHODOWIECKI, DANIEL, a celebrated engraver and painter, was born at Dantzic in 1726, and settled at Berlin. His spirited etchings, chiefly executed for books, are very numerous. Among his best works is the engraving of the unfortunate family of Calas. (See CALAS.) Chodowiecki was appointed director of the Royal Academy at Berlin, and died in 1801.
