CALTANISSETTA, a province of Sicily, bounded north
by the province of Palermo, east by Catania, south by
Syracuse and the Mediterranean, west by Girgenti. It is
divided into three districts,—viz., Caltanissetta, Piazza, and
Terranova,—and has an area of about 1200 square miles,
and a population (1851) of 180,791. The soil of the pro-
vince is somewhat hilly, but well watered and fertile.
