CAMENÆ, or CAMÆNÆ, also called Carmenæ, Casmenæ, certain prophetic nymphs connected with the religious worship of ancient Italy, though later traditions represent them as of Arcadian origin. The appellation is derived from carmen a "prophecy." Of these goddesses, the principal was Carmen or Carmen, who had a temple and altars at Rome. See CARMENTALIA. The muses are frequently called Camenæ by the Roman poets.
