CASTELVETRO, LUDOVICO (1505-1571), was a native of Modena, and the author of a Commentary on Aristotle's Poetics. At the instance of his rival Annibale Caro, he was cited before the inquisition to answer for a certain book of Melanchthon which he had translated into Italian. Being afraid of the issue of his trial he fled to Basle, where he spent the rest of his days.
