CREUX (French), a term in sculpture. Creux originally signifies a hollow or cavity out of which something has been scooped: hence en creux is applied to that kind of sculpture where the lines and figures are formed by cutting in upon the surface to be ornamented; and thus it stands opposed to relievo.
