CTESIBIUS, an Alexandrian mathematician, who flourished about 250 B.C. He is famous as the inventor of several ingenious hydraulic machines, including a clepsydra, a water-organ, and a particular kind of force-pump. He is also said to have written several mathematical treatises, which are however now lost. See HYDRODYNAMICS.
