CUMBERLAND, the capital of Alleghany county, North America, on the north bank of the river Potomac, 179 miles from Baltimore. It contains a court-house, county prison, market-house, two banks, and several handsome churches. In the immediate neighbourhood is a rich and extensive coal region, which in 1851 yielded to Baltimore alone a supply of 163,855 tons. Pop. (1850) 6076.
