DAIS (French d'ais), a platform or raised floor at the upper end of ancient dining halls, where the principal persons sat at table. It was also used to signify a seat with a high back, and sometimes surmounted by a canopy, for those who sat at the high table.
DALECARLIA or DALARNE, an old province of Sweden, now forming the laen of Falun, and celebrated for its valuable mines. The Dalecarlians were the first and most faithful adherents of Gustavus Vasa. See SWEDEN.
